POST-CIVIL WAR-YEAR 5

POST-CIVIL WAR

The civil war ended in 1970 and in 1975 Gen. Muritala

Mohammed took over from Gen. Gowon in a coup. In 1976,

Gen. Muritala was assassinated in a failed coup attempt and

was succeeded by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo who later handed

over power to a democratically elected president Alhaji Shehu

Shagari.

Shagari was later overthrown in 1983 and Major Gen.

Muhammadu Buhari took overpower. In 1985, Major Gen.

Ibrahim Babangida took over as head of state till 1993 when he

handed over to Ernest Shonekan, who handed over to Major

Gen. Sani Abacha. When Abacha died on June 8, 1998,

Abdulsalam Abubakar took over and handed over to a

democratically elected president Olusegun Obasanjo on May

29, 1999, and from there we have not had another coup till date.
