Types of Marriage

                  

Major Types of Marriages

 1. Christian marriage: A Christian marriage is a marriage which has been instituted and functions according to biblical principles. It is a marriage between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24Matthew 19:4,5). 

In a Christian marriage, there is no room for multiple wives or husbands. Neither is a marriage between two men or women a marriage according to biblical principles. A Christian marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman for life.

 2. Islamic marriage: In Islamic law (sharia), marriage (nikāḥ نکاح) is a legal and social contract between two individuals. 

Marriage is an act of Islam and is strongly recommended. 

Polygyny is permitted in Islam under some conditions, but polyandry is forbidden.

 3. Traditional marriage: This type of marriage is according to the culture and traditions of certain people. 

In traditional marriage, polygamy is allowed but polyandry is a taboo.

4. Court marriage: This is marriage according to the marriage law of your state of residence. 

For a court marriage, a notice in writing has to be given to the marriage officer of that district by the two parties (persons) who intend to marry. The bride or the groom should be residing in that district at least since 30 days before the date of marriage. The proof of age and residence should also be provided.


Other Types of Marriages are:

i. Polygamy: (a) Polygyny: This is a type of marriage in which a man marries more than one wife.

ii. Polyandry: This is a type of marriage in which a woman marries more than one husband.

iii. Monogamy: This is a type of marriage in which a man is married to one woman.

iv. Levirate: Is a marriage in which a man marries the widow of his dead brother.

v. Surrogate: Is a type of marriage in which a widower marries one of wife’s sister.

vi. Gay(same-sex marriage): 

(a) Homosexual: Is a type of marriage between a man and a man. 

(b) Lesbians: This is a type of marriage between a woman and a woman.

Importance of Marriage:

i. It is ordained by God

ii. It reduces fornication

iii. It also, helps in reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. ( STDS).

iv. Marriage discourages teenage pregnancy

v. Children raised in good marriages are less likely to be criminals.

vi. Marriage reduces hatred and discrimination among different tribes.
