SOCIAL STUDIES SUMMARY NOTE


POVERTY AND DISEASE

Poverty is the state of being very poor. All over the world, there are people who live in poverty.

SOME OF THE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO POVERTY ARE:

v Over-population

v Under-development

v Corrupt governments

v War

v Debt

v Diseases

Also, Infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis

cholera and diarrhoea occur as a result of lack of clean 

water, bad sanitation and lack of access to good food.

 Also, malnutrition and diseases such as kwashiorkor and

dysentery affect children.

SOME OF THE WAYS POVERTY CAN BE ERADICATED 

ARE:

11. The government and people must make sure women are educated.

22. The government must provide better healthcare and education for poor people

33. The government must create jobs for unemployed people


WAGES AND INCOME DISTRIBUTION

An income is a money an individual or business receives in 

exchange for labour and services.

While a wage is a fixed regular payment earned for work or services, typically paid on a daily or weekly basis.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE WORK

1.      To earn money(salary/wages/income) to sustain ourselves and our families

2.      To use our skills to contribute to society

3.      To be productive to our community

4.      To sustain our lifestyle

5.      To practice what we have learnt as teachers, engineers, scientists etc.

THE REWARDS OF WORKING                

When you work, your reward will come in different ways:

1.      Salary: This usually comes every month

2.      Allowances such as money for health, transport and housing.

3.      Bonus: This is special money that is paid to workers to mark a successful working year.

4.      The satisfaction of helping and contributing to society

5.      Succeeding in your profession

 

 


COMMUNICATION

Communication is simply the exchange of information between two people. Communication is a two-way process, which means that someone sends the information and another person receives and understands it. It can verbal, which involves speaking. It can also be non-verbal, which means communication without speaking, using signs and body language.

 TRADITIONAL MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

1. Town Crier: In villages, a town crier would walk around beating a gong and announcing messages for all to hear

2. Fire signal: In the past, people would light fires on high ground to alert people below.

3. Messenger: People would also send news through a messenger.

One of the disadvantages is that it is slow and not so reliable.


 MODERN MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

A. Electronic Means of Communication: This is the process of exchanging information with the aid of electronic devices. Examples:

1. Telephone 2. E-mail Radio

3. Television 4. Billboard

B. Mass Communication: This is the process of communicating with many people at the same time. We can use the following to communicate with many people at the same time:

1. Newspaper 2. Magazine

3. Television 4. Radio

4. Billboard

C. Post: People send letters and documents through the post office to people in other locations. The only disadvantage is that it may take a number of days for documents to be delivered.

MODERN MEANS OF COMMUNICATION


Today, most means of communication are fast and powered by electricity. 

ELECTRONIC MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

Examples:

1. Telephone
Today, many people have telephone lines. The telephone helps us to communicate with people over a long distance. 
Before now, the telephones are connected by cables. Later, a wireless device came called Mobile was invented. These can work in a certain range. These mobiles can be carried through in a pocket also. Today, most of us are using these telephones to communicate.

2. E-mail
With the invention of the internet, people can now send e-mails. E-mail message gets delivered instantly and is free.

MASS COMMUNICATION
This is a means of communication where we can communicate with many people at the same time.

Examples:

1. Newspapers and Magazine

2. Radio

3. Television

4. video conference

5. Billboards

6. Blogging

7. Virtual Reality
