THE STORY OF JOSEPH (1)

MEMORY VERSE:

Genesis: 37:10

"What is this that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers bow down to you?”

Joseph was one of the twelve Sons of Jacob. His mother's

name was Rachael and he had a younger brother called

Benjamin. He was is father's favourite son because he was an obedient boy.  His father made a long-sleeved robe of many colours for him.

Joseph had two dreams:

Joseph dreamt that he and his brothers were binding sheaves in the field and his brothers' sheaves bowed down to his own.

In the second dream, Joseph saw the sun, moon and eleven stars worshipping him.

His brothers do not like Joseph because of the following reasons:

v  Because he was his father's favourite son.

v  Because of his dream of greatness

Joseph’s brothers were in Dothan looking after the flock when Jacob sent Joseph to go and give them food. When they saw him and they planned to kill him but Reuben, one of the brothers advised them not to kill Joseph but to throw him into a nearby dry pit. After a while, they brought him out of the pit and sold him to some traders (Ishmaelite)  going to Egypt at twenty shekels of silver.

JOSEPH AS THE SERVANT OF POTIPHAR

Genesis39:9

"How can I do this great wickedness and sin against

God."

JOSEPH IN POTIPHAR'S HOUSE

Potiphar was an officer of the king of Egypt. He bought Joseph as a slave. He was a good man but his wife was a bad woman. One day, she told Joseph to sleep with her but Joseph refused and this angered her and she lied against Joseph that Joseph wanted to rape her. She told her husband who believed her and put Joseph in Prison.

JOSEPH IN PRISON

While Joseph was in prison, he helped the chief butler and baker to interpret their dreams. Joseph told the chief butler to remember him after regaining his freedom. While the chief baker was killed three days after he was released, the butler was given back his job at the palace.

JOSEPH INTERPRETS PHARAOH'S DREAMS

Two years after Joseph was put in prison, Pharaoh, the king of

 Egypt had two dreams:

v  He saw  seven bad cows eating seven good cows.

v  He saw seven thin maize destroying seven good maize.

No one in Egypt was able to tell the meaning and then the

chief butler remembered Joseph and told the king about him.

When Joseph came, he interpreted the dreams thus:

"There would be seven years of plenty food and thereafter,

there would be seven years of famine".

He advised the king to store plenty of food against the seven

years of famine. The king was pleased with him and decided

to make Joseph the governor of Egypt

THE STORY OF JOSEPH (II)

Joseph sets trap for his brothers

MEMORY VERSE:

Genesis 44:17 "Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go on peace to your father."

When Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy food, Joseph

recognized them but they did not. Joseph ordered his

 steward:

"Fill the men's sack with food as much as they can carry

and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack and

put my cup, the silver cup in the mouth of the sack of the

youngest, with his money for the grain."

After they have left, Joseph sent his steward after them and

accuse them of stealing. They search all their sacks, and the

45  silver cup was found in Benjamin's sack. They all begged

Joseph and  Joseph said: "Only the man in whose hand the

the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go on

 peace to your father."

Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers

When Joseph realized that their father, Jacob would die if

Benjamin did not return with his brothers, he said: "I am

Joseph; is my father still alive?" This made them be confused and He kissed his brothers as a sign of forgiveness.

Pharaoh invited Jacob and his family to Egypt

The King of Egypt and all the Egyptians were happy to hear that Joseph's brothers had come to Egypt. The King then

invited Jacob and his family to Egypt. The King gave them a

fertile place to settle in Goshen area of the River Nile."
