THE STORY OF JOSEPH (1)
MEMORY VERSE:
Genesis: 37:10
"What is this that you have dreamed?
Shall I and your mother and your brothers bow down to you?”
Joseph was one of the twelve Sons of Jacob. His mother's
name was Rachael and he had a younger brother called
Benjamin. He was is father's favourite son because he was an obedient boy. His father made a long-sleeved robe of many colours for him.
Joseph had two dreams:
Joseph
dreamt that he and his brothers were binding
sheaves in the field and his brothers' sheaves bowed down to his own.
In
the second dream,
Joseph saw the sun, moon and eleven stars worshipping him.
His
brothers do not like Joseph because of the following reasons:
v Because he was his father's favourite son.
v Because of his dream of greatness
Genesis39:9
"How can I do this great wickedness and sin against
God."
JOSEPH IN POTIPHAR'S HOUSE
Potiphar
was an officer of the king of Egypt. He bought Joseph as a slave.
He was a good man but his wife was a bad woman. One day, she told Joseph to
sleep with her but Joseph refused and this angered her and she lied against Joseph
that Joseph wanted to rape her. She told her husband who believed her and put
Joseph in Prison.
JOSEPH IN PRISON
While Joseph was
in prison, he helped the chief butler and baker to interpret their dreams.
Joseph told the chief butler to remember him after regaining his freedom. While
the chief baker was killed three days after he was released, the butler was
given back his job at the palace.
JOSEPH INTERPRETS PHARAOH'S DREAMS
Two years after Joseph was put in prison, Pharaoh, the king of
Egypt had two dreams:
v He saw
seven bad cows eating seven good cows.
v He saw seven thin maize destroying seven good
maize.
No one in Egypt was able to tell the meaning and then the
chief butler remembered Joseph and told the king about him.
When Joseph came, he interpreted the dreams
thus:
"There would be seven years of plenty food and thereafter,
there would be seven years of famine".
Joseph sets trap for his brothers
MEMORY VERSE:
Genesis 44:17 "Only the man in
whose hand the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go on peace to
your father."
When Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy food, Joseph
recognized them but they did not. Joseph ordered his
steward:
"Fill the men's sack with food as much as they can carry
and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack and
put my cup, the silver cup in the mouth of the sack of the
youngest, with his money for the grain."
After they have left, Joseph sent his steward after them and
accuse them of stealing. They search all their sacks, and the
45 silver cup was found in Benjamin's sack. They all begged
Joseph and Joseph said: "Only the man in whose hand the
the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go on
peace to your father."
Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers
When Joseph realized that their father, Jacob would die if
Benjamin did not return with his brothers, he said: "I am
Joseph; is my father still alive?" This made them be confused and He kissed his brothers as a sign of forgiveness.
Pharaoh invited Jacob and his family to Egypt
The King of Egypt and all the Egyptians were happy to hear that Joseph's brothers had come to Egypt. The King then
invited Jacob and his family to Egypt. The King gave them a
fertile place
to settle in Goshen area of the River Nile."
